THOUGHTS ON THE WEST SIDE STADIUM
Speaking as a non-fan of sports, I know I don't have the same drives and yearnings as some of the rabid fans who want and NEED their own stadium in New York. So already, that insures that some people are going to find my point of view unthinkable. Rational people, however, may agree.
I am glad
the whole deal fell through. The city doesn't have unspeakable gobs of money to spend on a sports stadium, what with constant road repair, the subways always a mess, increased police presence and the homeless problem. Bloomberg wants the olympics here? I don't. I have to commute into the city each day, and flooding the city with tourists and Olympic folk is not my idea of a good time. Nor would I appreciate the vast increase in West Side Highway traffic which would make any coomute into the city a nightmare (not like it isn't already on some days".
Yes, Olympics are great, Yes morale booster to NYC, yes the dream of gold and all that, but when it comes down to it, it just wouldn't have been a good thing.
Of course,
it could still happen, but let Queens get bombarded with traffic, for all I care.
